Sandhill Cranes range in height from three to four feet tall and weigh between 10 to 12 pounds. Wing span on these majestic birds is between six to seven feet, and their life spans from 20 to 40 years. Adult sandhills are gray in color with a red ‘crown’, which is actually a bald patch of skin. There are migratory and non-migratory sub-species of sandhill cranes in the U.S. Florida sandhill cranes are of the non-migratory sub-species. A sandhill crane has a loud, rolling, trumpeting call that can be heard a mile away. Sandhill cranes typically choose their mates at around seven years old. The pairs mate for life and are typically with their mates year-round. Sandhill crane chicks are called ‘colts’, they will remain with their parents for approximately nine to 10 months after they hatch.
